New Release: Brody and the Lonely Kraken, a children’s picture book

brody and the lonely krakenAuthor: KayeC Jones and Russ Hughes

Publication Date: August 22, 2016

Received From: ARC from author

Synopsis from Amazon

It was a beautiful day at the beach and Brody was having fun in the sand. When everyone watched a boat pulled down by gigantic tentacles, everyone was ran away from the beach. But brave Brody decides to find out what happened and why.

My Thoughts

This is a cute children’s picture book that teaches kindness and doing nice things for other people. Brody demonstrates kindness by befriending the Kraken, who believes no one wants to be his friend. The Kraken demonstrates kindness by saving people who find themselves in undesirable situations near the water.

The illustrations are beautiful, colorful and bold. The writing is easy to read while still teaching the lesson of kindness and friendship. I highly recommend this book for children and their parents to enjoy together!

This book is being released on August 22, 2016. Get it on Amazon!

Captivate Me Review and #Giveaway!!

Captivate Me
S.J. Pierce
Publication date: April 1st 2014
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult

Captivate Me is Book One of The Captivated Series, a Young Adult Paranormal Romance

“My mom had always told me – when you meet “the one,” you’ll know; they’ll captivate your heart the moment you lay eyes on them. I had always wondered, though, if my mom’s words of wisdom were finite – if they applied to everyone. Maybe those who had found their one great love were the lucky few, and maybe the rest of us would have to settle for less than earth-shattering.”

Seventeen-year-old Kat Walsh is a Gifted – a human with paranormal abilities. With her mom a former Angel and her dad a dream prophet, it’s always been in her genetic make-up to be extraordinary. Unfortunately for her, the world can’t handle the strange or unusual. So when she slips up and uses her powers at her high school in Ireland, the entire student body treats her like a freak – even the ones she thought were her closest friends.

Broken, but hopeful for a fresh start, she allows her parents to enroll her in a boarding school buried deep within the forests of a small Colorado town. At Midland Pines, School for the Gifted, she feels as though she can finally be herself; she makes new friends and even has the attention of the most popular guy in school – Levi. Everything feels normal again… or does it?

Not long after her arrival, weird dreams of an alluring boy whom she’s never met surface during the night, and the eerie, shadowy trees encircling their school seem to call to her. As these disturbing, yet enticing developments intensify, other bizarre occurrences happen – students and staff turn up missing, and mystery visitors leave gifts while she sleeps. With all of these other things vying for her attention, a desperate Levi has to fight even harder to keep her interest. But with the dreams of the attractive boy slowly captivating her heart, Kat has to make a choice – will she settle for ‘great’ Levi, or will she search for her elusive dream visitor, possibly stumbling across ‘amazing?’

From the author of the Alyx Rayer Chronicles, comes a refreshingly different Young Adult series with plenty of love, suspense, and a new take on the Paranormal.

Recommended for readers 16 and up due to mature content.

My Thoughts on Captivate Me

If you asked me what my favorite kind of book is, I would tell you it is this book. I love a book full of romance, fantasy and twists, which is exactly what this book offers to readers.

From the beginning, I was enthralled with this book. The writing was wonderful and I could relate to the characters. Kat has a history of trouble fitting in with her classmates, which I’m sure almost everyone who has gone to high school can relate to (although for most of us, it’s not because we can move things with our minds). She yearned to fit in, which might have clouded her judgment a bit and caused some of her troubles throughout the story. I really enjoyed the love story between Kat and Gabe. They are so sweet together and treat each other well, unlike the characters in many young adult novels these days. You can really believe that they are soul mates.

The magic and range of “gifts” the characters in this book possess is reminiscent of X-Men, but is unique enough to feel interesting and new. I get tired of some of the mythologies and magic in young adult books because they all seem the same, but this is very different than the books I have read lately.

This book has it all: fantasy, magic, romance, and suspense. There are major twists that you don’t see coming until it’s too late. You will get sucked in and not want to put this book down!

I recommend this book for teenagers and young adults (and not so young adults!) It is the first book in the series, so you will want to be sure to also check out Fight For Me, which is also out now. My review of Fight For Me is below.

Fight For Me
S.J. Pierce
Publication date: February 14th 2014
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult

A fresh start – something Kat and Gabriel thought they would find when they left their pasts behind at Midland Pines High and moved to a compound for hybrids. Or at least safety from a witch seeking revenge. But now… that’s all changed. Now, thanks to a flirty hybrid hell-bent on winning Gabriel’s attention, the terrifying visions of another prophetic Gifted, and the strange and worrisome behavior of one of their closest friends, Kat finds herself fighting for things that had once come so easily, including her relationship with her soulmate. And now she’s afraid.

Recommended for readers 16 and up due to mature content.

My Thoughts on Fight For Me

I enjoyed Fight For Me just as much as Captivate Me, but in different ways. In Fight For Me, we get a new setting, which I always find a nice change. Getting to learn about a new location, especially one as magical as the hybrid compound, is exciting. And a good love triangle makes things exciting as well.

Before the events of Fight For Me, Kat and Gabe have only been together for a short time and have not had any real turmoil in their relationship. The move to the compound and the introduction of new people throws a wrench in their perfect relationship and they have to learn how to grow together and trust each other. They also get the opportunity to grow personally and develop their individual interests.

There is another unexpected twist that throws everything into chaos and you won’t see it coming until it happens (or at least I didn’t).

I recommend this book for teenagers and adults who enjoy young adult paranormal romance novels.

Like many authors, Megan Crewe finds writing about herself much more difficult than making things up. A few definite facts: she lives with her husband, son, and three cats in Toronto, Canada (and does on occasion say “eh”), she tutors children and teens with special needs, and she can’t look at the night sky without speculating about who else might be out there.

Synopsis from Amazon

A story of a self, lost…a self, loathed…and a self, rediscovered
In Haddleboro, North Carolina, Scout Webb is a 14 year-old kind, spirited small town southern girl and a tomboy much like her namesake, the young narrator from her mother’s favorite book. With both her name and her Christian faith deeply woven into the fabric of her identity, Scout always felt like she had a lot to live up to – she was the kind of girl who made her parents proud.
It’s August 1983, and Scout is playing on a summer baseball team with Charlie Porter, her best friend since Kindergarten. More than anything, she is looking forward to her last few weeks at Camp Judah, a Christian camp near the Catawba River. She can’t wait to see her big crush “Brother Doug,” the thirty-two year old camp lifeguard who has watched her grow up each summer since she was seven years old. But after a few fateful days and one catastrophic event during her last day at the camp, Scout will be changed forever. Continue reading A story of self-discovery and forgiveness: Scout’s Honor
